SEND Provision

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disability.

This page is designed to give parents, carers and family members an overview of the additional support that your child may receive whilst they are at Worplesdon Primary School.

It is not unusual for a child to receive additional support in their learning and the support we offer is carried out in a caring and supportive way.  We monitor a child’s progress carefully and ensure that all relevant adults are involved in the support plan.

Children who are not on the Special Educational Needs and Disability Register may receive additional support in order to address their needs at an early stage.

Special Educational Needs and Disability Register

Children who continue to need help that is additional to and different from the rest of the class will be entered on to our Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Register. These children are then described as receiving “SEND Support.”

Children can have very different needs from one another and so each child will be given the support that is right for their needs.  This will mean that some children require a lot of support whereas others may not need as much e.g. one child might need an adult to help in Maths and Literacy whereas another child might just need a physiotherapy programme for 10 minutes per day or a social skills programme once a week.

What is a Provision Map

While your child is on the SEND Register we will set targets on a Provision Map.  You and your child will be involved in this process of target setting.

This document will also highlight the intervention programmes and types of support that your child will be receiving.

Your child’s class teacher will review this Provision Map with you at points throughout the year and will add your comments and views onto the document.

SEND Support Arrangements Document

In a few cases, it might be that problems persist and additional support is needed to address more complex needs.  If this happens, we work with the child, family and all relevant agencies (such as the Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist etc) to find out what is going well and what might be getting in the way of progress.

Rather than a Provision Map, at this point, you may find that the school will set targets on a document entitled ‘SEND support arrangements’ which sets out your child’s targets under four headings:

  • Communication and Interaction;
  • Cognition and Learning;
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health;
  • Physical and Sensory.

Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)

We then may need to go further and request an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) which will help to fund additional support for the child.  The intention throughout this process is that the child and family are at the centre of this Plan and so the family will work closely with key professionals.
